Comboni College-Lira is an A'Level Boy's Boarding school located in Ngetta, Lira City , 8km along Lira-Kitgum road.
Comboni College started from a humble begining in 1937 by the Comboni Missionaries (Verona Fathers) of the Catholic Church as a preparatory school which later became a normal or formal school. In 1947, the school was upgraded to a Vernacular Teacher Training College (VTTC)
In 1948, the school (VTTC) was handed over to the Xaverian Brothers who changed it to a Junior Secondary School called St. Francis Xavier Junior Secondary School headed by Brother Nathaniel.
In 1960, the St. Francis Xavier Junior Secondary School was renamed Comboni College under the patronage of St. Daniel Comboni. It became the first private secondary school in Lango with Rev.Fr. Lubich as the first Headteacher Comboni College. In 1963, the school became a government aided secondary school.
Academic Development:
The first batch of 24 students from Comboni College were presented for the Senior Cambridge Examinations in 1963.
Earlier achievement
Ø In 1967, Comboni College won the first position in the Science Fair Competitions both at the Regional and National levels.
Ø In 1969, a Combonian won the first prize in the Brook Bond Essay competition that also earned Comboni College a Sanyo Television set.
Ø In 1970, another Combonian won the first prize in the United Nations Essay competition.
Indeed Comboni College was for a long time one of the top performing Secondary Schools in Uganda both in academics and co-curricular activities. This made it to be referred to in the past as “Comboni Automatic”. Consequently, it has continued to produce many distinguished scholars and professionals in various field or disciplines.
Comboni College remained an O’level boys’ school from 1960 up to 1980. In 1981, it then attained an A’ level status
Current school status
Comboni College is being headed by functional Board of Governors, PTA executives and abled administrators who are dedicated and well guided by the school vision, Mission and Motto. The school has consistently performed well in national examinations in recent years, and has become a hub for innovation, where its students have excelled in regional and national science competitions.
